The American International School of Freetown is a secular, co-educational US Embassy sponsored school serving both expatriate and local students in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Since our founding in 1986, we have been located on a leafy hilltop overlooking the sea. Accredited in the US by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, AISF offers highly differentiated pre-school to grade 8 teaching and learning. By intention, our classrooms are multi-age and grade level. Every classroom is staffed with an experienced international educator with a Masters degree and US, UK, Canadian, or European certification plus a certified/AISF trained teaching assistant, either international or Sierra Leonean, who is a full partner in teaching and learning. Class size is limited to 20 students per classroom with two grade levels in each classroom. All students work at their appropriate grade level with the advantage of easy access to both enrichment and extra support. Teaching and learning take advantage of both US and UK resources and systems. Teachers have created published curriculum built on backwards design and using US Standards (Common Core, Next Generation Science, McRel). In the ECC and Elementary schools, we combine US common core standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts with the inquiry-based International Early Years and International Primary Curriculum. AISF also offers a blended learning program for students in high school through grade 12 with an onsite teacher/proctor. Using primarily VHS Learning supplemented by the University of Nebraska High School, AISF students earn US credits and can earn a US high school diploma. Enrichment in Art, PE, Music, and Computer programming/coding is available from grades 1 through high school, in onsite classes taught by qualified specialists. French is offered as well from Early Childhood. IT is integrated fully into teaching and learning grades 1 to 12, with an iPad program grades 1 to 4 and a BYOD system in grades 5 through high school. All teachers run Google classrooms from grade 5 through grade 8. All resources are first world quality, imported annually from the US and UK. Professional development for all staff is continuous, offering both onsite and international opportunities.
