The Bishop Mackenzie International Schools (BMIS) is an international, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 12 for pupils of all nationalities. The school year comprises of 3 trimesters extending from mid-August to early December, from early January through late March, and early April to late June.

BMIS is non-sectarian, despite its name, and serves the diplomatic, NGO, Government, and business communities in the capital Lilongwe. It is accredited by NEASC, and is a member of CIS and AISA.

The school follows the IBPYP in the Primary School and IBMYP in years 7-10 of the Secondary School. MYP is systematically being introduced throughout the Secondary School and will replace the existing curriculum which follows the English National Curriculum for Year 11 (grade 10), leading to IGCSE in year 11 this year. The IB Diploma is offered in years 12 and 13.

Appropriate degree and teaching certificate in the relevant subject are essential, plus at least two years relevant experience. 2-year package includes US dollar-linked salary with gratuity, annual flights, baggage, accommodation, and international insurance. Please note BMIS is aligned with the recommendations of the International Task Force on Child Protection, and we hold ourselves to a high standard of effective recruiting practices with specific attention to child protection.

Normally the Director and often one of the Head Teachers, will interview all candidates for employment at the school. During your interview you will learn more about life in Malawi and the school’s expectations and conditions of employment. Please be ready with any appropriate questions or comments you have about the information presented here. As with any international school there is a certain amount of staff turnover, and as a result, replacing or supplementing such a very rich and vital resource with talented, committed and positive teachers must be the school’s highest priority. Some of the characteristics that we look for in teachers are the following:

• Someone who can recognize and teach to the needs of the individual child

• A teacher who knows how to use a variety of methods, strategies, and instructional techniques as well as understands how these fit into the BMIS curriculum

• Someone who has the ability to work as a team member in all aspects of school life

• People who actively work to involve community members in the learning process; both inside and outside of the school environment

• Teachers who actively take part in staff development opportunities and view themselves as learners too.
