Schrole is proud to represent some of the very best international schools from around the world. In our School Spotlight series, we’ll take an in-depth look at these schools, detailing their history, ethos, location and of course, benefits, to help you choose the school that best suits you.

About: BASIS

BASIS International Schools is a part of the BASIS Curriculum network of schools in the United States, China, and Thailand.

The group’s first international school, BASIS International School Shenzhen, opened in 2015 with over 400 students and was recognised as the largest international school opening in the history of southern China. BASIS International School Guangzhou followed in 2017, and was the first campus to offer a week-day boarding program.

BASIS International Schools Hangzhou and Park Lane Harbour opened in 2018, and BASIS International School Nanjing opened in 2019. BASIS International School Bangkok, the first BASIS International School outside of China, opened in fall of 2019. The first bilingual school in its network, BASIS Bilingual School Shenzhen, opened in 2020.

In 2022, BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Chengdu became the first campus in the network to offer both international and bilingual curriculum in one location. BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan followed in 2023 and brought our innovative curriculum to the very heart of China in Hubei province.

The BASIS International Schools network is growing rapidly, with two more campuses opening in Shenzhen in 2024 and more locations coming in future years.

Graduates of BASIS schools have been accepted into top universities around the world, including Oxford, MIT, Cornell, University of Chicago, University of Toronto, Imperial College London, UCLA, Duke, and many more.

Students from BASIS International Schools have also earned top honours in a wide variety of academic and artistic competitions, such as in the National Economics Challenge Global Round, and EdTA drama competitions.

During COVID-19, not only did BASIS schools continue to pay teachers and provide full benefits, the BASIS network also provided support in the form of logistics, travel and quarantine arrangements, and more to support its expat teachers, staff, and school leaders.

Ethos: BASIS International Schools

BASIS International Schools mission is to provide students with a transformative early childhood and K-12 education. With the cutting-edge BASIS Curriculum, through exceptional teaching and faculty mentoring, BASIS International Schools produce graduates who have broad intellectual capabilities, international perspectives, critical thinking proficiency, and creative problem-solving skills to be leaders in their future academic and professional lives.

BASIS believes:

Children can achieve more than they have commonly been told. With hard work, dedication, and the support of teachers and parents, 3rd graders can think critically, 6th graders can learn physics, and high school students can read critical theory and philosophy.

Instructional time is precious. Every minute of every class should be meaningful.

Mastering the basics is the precondition for going beyond them. Students learn to listen for the music of Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter and to decipher crucial details in a historical primary source, but they must also be able to parse the grammar of a sentence and craft concise and persuasive prose.

Homework, as long as it is an extension of what is being learned in the classroom, is valuable. Practice helps students achieve mastery.

High-stakes, summative tests that assess content mastery and learning skills (BASIS Curriculum Comprehensive Exams and the College Board Advanced Placement Exams, for example) are foundational for learning.

The evaluation of teacher performance must be based both on classroom instruction and on student learning results of high-stakes assessments.
