Position Overview:
At GWA we have a comprehensive counseling program, with school counselors required to fulfill the
school’s needs for guidance counseling and for college counseling. This position requires an 11-
month contract, which is longer than our teacher contract.

Key Responsibilities:
System Work:
• Advisory Committee member ensuring staff have adequate training and support, supplies,
and curriculum for grades 6-12
• Course request planning and course registration coordination
• Keep documentation of individual case notes and provide transition files to incoming
counselors
Student Needs:
• Advisement and appraisal for academic planning
• Orientation, coordination and academic advising for new students, including taking the lead
in developing and implementing our advisory program
• Interpreting cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests
• Providing counseling to students who are frequently tardy or absent
• Providing counseling (not consequences) to students who have disciplinary problems
• Providing short-term individual and small group counseling services to students
• Consulting with teachers to schedule and present school counseling curriculum lessons
based on developmental needs and needs identified through data• Interpreting student records
• Analyzing grade-point averages in relationship to achievement
• Consulting with teachers about building classroom connections, effective classroom
management and the role of noncognitive factors in student success
• Protecting student records and information
• Consulting with the school principal to identify and resolve student issues, needs and
problems
• Advocating for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and
school attendance meetings as necessary
• Analyzing and disaggregating schoolwide and school counseling program data
• Provide parents with education regarding child development, child rearing, and other
topics, as appropriate
• Be a visible, engage member of the GWA community
• Find opportunities for students to enrich their learning through summer and extra-
curricular programs, and provide students with the information
Undertake other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Abilities:
• A Masters degree in school counseling, guidance counseling, or the equivalent
• Valid licensure for school counseling or guidance counseling, from a state or provincial
Department of Education, or the equivalent.
• Three years of counseling experience are preferred.
• Classroom teaching experience is preferred.
• Working knowledge of the ASCA National Model and the ability to implement ASCA
standards
