About: Harare International School

Founded in 1992, Harare International School (HIS) is a not-for-profit, co-educational day school located in the vibrant capital of Zimbabwe. Set on a lush 22-acre campus in the leafy suburb of Mount Pleasant, HIS provides a world-class international education to a diverse student body representing over 40 nationalities. The school is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Middle States Association (MSA), and offers the full continuum of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes: Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP).

HIS is known for its inclusive, inquiry-driven approach to learning that encourages students to engage with authentic experiences both in and beyond the classroom. Students graduate with the skills, confidence, and values needed to thrive in an ever-changing global landscape. The school’s mission – to inspire curiosity, embrace challenge, and nurture personal growth – infuses every aspect of life at HIS, from academics to extracurriculars.

Educators at HIS join a collaborative, student-focused community that values cultural diversity, open-mindedness, and holistic development. Supported by exceptional facilities and a commitment to ongoing professional learning, teachers are empowered to lead engaging, meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for success beyond graduation.

Ethos: Harare International School

At the heart of HIS is a deep belief in the power of education to shape lives and communities. The school’s mission statement – A Boldly Diverse Learning Community that Inspires Curiosity, Embraces Challenge, and Nurtures Personal Growth – guides everything from curriculum design to classroom culture.

HIS fosters an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and reflect on their growth as learners and individuals. Leadership development, service learning, and co-curricular activities are central to this ethos, helping students understand their roles as compassionate global citizens. Whether leading a community initiative, presenting at ZiMUN (Zimbabwe’s premier Model United Nations conference), or performing in a music festival, HIS students are continually challenged to grow in confidence, empathy, and integrity.

For teachers, this ethos translates into a vibrant professional culture that values innovation, teamwork, and continuous reflection. Staff are supported to bring their full selves to the classroom and to contribute meaningfully to the school’s mission and community.
