About: Gunma Kousai Acadamy (GKA)
Ota City established Gunma Kokusai Academy (GKA), a private school offering a 12-year unified English immersion education in April 2005. The National Government designated Ota City as a special education zone in 2003. GKA opened its junior high school in April 2008 and its high school in April 2011.
GKA is proud to be Japan’s inaugural structural reform zone school. Since its founding, GKA has been at the forefront of educational transformation, nurturing students to achieve the highest levels of English proficiency in the country.
An authorised IB World School since 2 October 2011, GKA stands as a trailblazer in societal and educational innovation within Japan. Positioned as a forward-thinking institution within the Japanese educational landscape, GKA’s educators and staff are dedicated to guiding students to meet and exceed global educational standards.
Ethos: Gunma Kousai Acadamy (GKA)
Gunma Kokusai Academy aims to empower its students with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to, and provide leadership in, an ever-advancing global community. With the implementation of an English immersion-based curriculum, taught by a capable faculty of Japanese and foreign teachers, GKA challenges every student academically, morally, artistically, and physically.
Immersion education is a type of bilingual education in which students learn subjects such as math, science, social studies and art in their second language. Learning English is not a goal; the goal is to obtain knowledge and concept of the subjects. English is an instrument to achieve the goal. GKA adopts a partial immersion program where 70% of instruction is given in English.
Students at GKA develop an appreciation and understanding of the cultural diversity of the world we live in. And with the parallel teaching of the Japanese language and Japanese culture and history, students will maintain their esteem for Japanese traditions and their sense of identity as responsible Japanese citizens. Ultimately, GKA graduates pursue distinguished careers within Japan or internationally.
