Berlin Metropolitan School (BMS) is the largest international school in the centre of Berlin, educating over 1,000 students from more than 60 countries. Founded in 2004, BMS is an all-day school, allowing students from Kindergarten through to Year 12 to complete a modern, international education.

BMS’ values-based school program seeks to teach students both the necessary skills and knowledge for their future career and personal ambitions after school. The conception and development of this program is guided by a responsibility to offer students the opportunity to achieve the best possible academic results, to become engaged with new worldviews and perspectives, and to inspire them to realise their own personal goals – creating a space where students can allow their talents ad interests to naturally unfold.

Berlin Metropolitan School (BMS) is located on the northern edge of the Berlin suburb of Mitte, housed between Linienstrasse, Friedrichstrasse and Torstrasse, in one of the most diverse and vibrant areas of the city.

BMS school is also located close to several major sights in the city, such as New Synagogue, the Hackescher Markt, Museum Island and much more. BMS’ neighbourhood is situated in the arts-and-culture scene of Berlin Mitte, surrounded by prominent galleries and theaters that enjoy a high regard even far beyond Germany’s borders. BMS’ school environment is both an inspiration to our school as well as one to which we are deeply committed.

BMS sees its location as a major asset—particularly for international families – as it is part of an urban, close-knit community. BMS establishes partnerships with local institutions, support social projects in its direct neighbourhood, and uses its central location to enrich its school program.

In addition, the school is also easily accessible from all parts of the city via the public transport network the U-Bahn (U6, Oranienburger Tor), S-Bahn (S1, S2 and S25, Oranienburger Straße), tram (M1, M6 and M12, Oranienburger Tor), and the bus (240, Torstraße/Oranienburger Tor) are all within a few minutes’ walk.

Starting Salary Range: The BMS pay scale as one essential part in value the work of every member of faculty was re-worked with a committee by teachers from all section and senior leaders. The BMS pay scale is structured according to years of experience and the program each respective teacher is teaching.

Taxes: Individuals who are resident in Germany or have their normal place of abode there have full income tax liability. The gross salary (and, if applied, also tuition remission for children attending the school) is subject to German income tax. Once you have registered at the town hall, you will receive your tax identity number and classified into a tax group (I-V). The tax rates depend on family status and income level and range. Tax on income from employed work is retained by being deducted at source, i.e. an amount of tax is retained directly by the employer. Accommodation: BMS offers a housing search service for all staff members who have to relocate to Berlin.

Flights/Transport: BMS transition packages include expenses for travel as well as shipping. These benefits are valid one way and one time.

Furniture: Furnished flats for rent are available on flat search websites.

Moving Allowance: BMS will pay a settling in allowance one time fix to every new staff member who will relocate to Berlin for their position at BMS.

Dependent Opportunities: Staff are exempted from all school fees. As this benefit is considered as a remuneration in kind, staff members are only required to pay taxes on the lowest school fee.

Medical: Medical insurances can be chosen from a variety of public providers. BMS is happy to connect new staff with providers who have English speaking staff and a great support team for international staff.

Other: BMS offers continuous professional development, in-house German classes, health and wellbeing courses discounted lunch in our cafeteria, and many staff activities after school.

Retirement: BMS offers a company pension scheme which allows employees to save an individual amount of their salary through our monthly payroll system. For those employees who choose this pension scheme, BMS will add 15% on top of their monthly saving.
