Everything you need to know about becoming an international teacher in Indonesia

International teachers

As the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia offers an exciting opportunity for educators to make a meaningful impact in the lives of students.

From the bustling cities of Jakarta and Bali to the stunning beaches and forests of Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia is full of vibrant energy and natural beauty.

In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about becoming an international teacher in Indonesia, including visa requirements, cost of living, healthcare, cultural expectations and norms, and expat communities.

Visa requirements for working as an international teacher in Indonesia

International teachers who wish to live and work in Indonesia must obtain a work permit (IMTA) and a residence permit (KITAS).

To obtain a work permit, the employer must first apply for a Foreign Manpower Utilization Plan (RPTKA) from the Ministry of Manpower in Indonesia.

Once the RPTKA is approved, the employer will issue a Letter of Recommendation (SKTT) to the teacher, who can then apply for a work permit from the local manpower office (Depnaker) in Indonesia.

Along with the work permit, you must also apply for a residence permit (KITAS) from the local immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi).

The KITAS is typically valid for one year and can be extended for an additional two years.

Cost of living for international teachers in Indonesia

Generally, the cost of living in Indonesia is lower other countries in Southeast Asia, with accommodation and food being the most significant expenses.

A comfortable, furnished apartment in a desirable location can cost anywhere from $300 to $800 USD per month, depending on the city.

Food in Indonesia is generally inexpensive, with local dishes available for as little as $1-2 per meal.

Transportation costs are also relatively low, with public transportation such as buses and trains being very affordable.

Rent for one-bedroom apartment in city centre – $480 per month
Rent for one-bedroom apartment outside city centre – $287 per month
Loaf of bread – $1.20
Litre of milk – $1.30
12 eggs – $1.75
Takeaway coffee – $2.30
Meal for two at mid-range restaurant – $24.55
Public transport – $0.25 one way

Healthcare for international teachers in Indonesia

Indonesia’s healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers, with public hospitals offering affordable services to those who cannot afford private care. Private hospitals provide more specialised care and are often preferred by expats.

Additionally, there are numerous clinics and pharmacies available throughout the country for routine care and medication needs.

As an international teacher, it’s recommended to obtain private health insurance to ensure access to quality care and avoid potential financial burdens. Health insurance plans can be easily purchased in Indonesia or from international providers.

Many international schools in Indonesia offer health insurance as part of their employment package.

Cultural expectations and norms for international teachers in Indonesia

One of the most important aspects of Indonesian culture is the concept of “gotong royong,” which emphasizes the importance of communal cooperation and working together towards common goals.

Respect for elders and those in positions of authority is also highly valued, and teachers are expected to show deference to their superiors and engage with colleagues and students in a respectful and courteous manner.

In addition, modesty and humility are highly valued in Indonesian culture, and teachers should avoid boasting or drawing attention to themselves.

Expat communities for international teachers in Indonesia

Indonesia is home to a vibrant and diverse expat community, making it an ideal destination for international teachers seeking a supportive network of like-minded individuals.

Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya are among the most popular destinations for expats, and there are a variety of expat clubs and organisations that provide opportunities for socializing and networking.

These organizations also offer a wealth of resources for new expats, such as housing and job listings, language classes, cultural events, and more.
