Position: MS EAL Teacher
Our Middle School (MS) focuses on academic, social, and personal growth for all students in grades 6 through 8. In the MS, an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher may be assigned to a single or two grade levels (the latter if numbers are lower). The EAL teacher co-plans units and lessons and pushes into classes to support students, along with teaching separate English for Academic Purpose (EAP) classes for students at different WIDA levels from 2 to 5. The EAL teacher typically teaches two or three EAL classes to attend to students’ academic language acquisition and support and co-teaches alongside subject teachers in three or two classes, for a total of 5 teaching periods.
All full-time MS teachers serve as Advisory mentors and manage a non-stipended student activity or club, alongside typical supervision duties (e.g. cafeteria, hallways, etc).
Teachers at ISB collaborate with students, parents, counselors, and administrators to facilitate student learning and well-being. Teachers need to be: caring, patient, pedagogically strong, an expert at meeting the needs of diverse learners, and skillful, passionate, and positive when working with MS-aged children. Successful teachers build quality relationships with students and colleagues.
In addition to the shared roles of middle school teachers, the following specific attributes and experiences are sought:
EAL/ESL certification or equivalent
Dual certification/experience serving EAL and Special Needs/Learning Support is advantageous
Experience in co-planning and co-teaching models of support
Expertise in language instruction for English acquisition
Expertise and comfort in supporting different subject areas
Experience in administering and interpreting WIDA assessments preferred
Skilled at developing support and accommodations for EAL students
Personal Qualifications and Attributes of ISB MS Teachers:
Teaching license or certification for middle school years
Subject expertise in the primary area of employment
At least 3 years of teaching experience
Teaching experience in a similar type of international school and this age group (11-14 years old) is an advantage
Commitment to the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) of students.
Positive interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with people of diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated skill at differentiating within the classroom for students of mixed abilities
Experience with Standard-Based Grading
Experience designing units with UBD - ‘Understanding by Design’ is an advantage
