ISB considers mathematics an essential universal language, necessary as a reasoning tool to solve problems and make sense of our world. At ISB mathematical thinkers use reasoning and apply skills to solve problems, work collaboratively, and make informed decisions about the world. ISB follows the Common Core Mathematics Standards with continuing pathways that may include AP and/or IB courses.
Our Middle School (MS) focuses on academic, social, and personal growth for all students in grades 6 through 8. An ISB MS Mathematics teacher teaches 5 grade-level classes of mathematics in one or two grades (roughly 5/8ths of day), serves as an Advisory teacher, and manages a non-stipended student activity or club, alongside typical supervision duties (e.g. cafeteria, hallways, etc).
Teachers at ISB collaborate with students, parents, counselors, and administrators to facilitate student learning and well-being. ISB is currently engaged in becoming a PLC & RTI at Work model school. As such, teachers engage regularly in collaborative practices to ensure all students learn at high levels. Teachers need to be: caring, patient, pedagogically strong, an expert at meeting the needs of diverse learners, skillful, passionate, and positive when working with MS-aged children. Successful teachers build quality relationships with students and colleagues.
