The Position
This is a special circumstance contract for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year. The person appointed to this position is welcome to apply and be considered for ongoing, full time role at ISB per the process for all candidates.
Our Middle School (MS) focuses on academic, social, and personal growth for all students. In the MS, an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher is assigned one to two grade levels based on enrollment. The EAL teacher co-plans units and lessons with subject teachers and pushes into classes to support students. In addition, they teach scheduled English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes for a total of five blocks of EAL support. The EAP classes focus on language acquisition and development through the use of course content from students’ other courses (e.g. English, Social Studies, Science, etc.)
All full-time MS teachers serve as Advisory mentors and manage a non-stipended student activity or club, alongside typical supervision duties (e.g. cafeteria, hallways, etc).
Teachers at ISB collaborate with students, parents, counselors, and administrators to facilitate student learning and well-being. Teachers need to be: caring, patient, pedagogically strong, an expert at meeting the needs of diverse learners, and skillful, passionate, and positive when working with MS-aged children. Successful teachers build quality relationships with students and colleagues.
In addition to the shared roles of middle school teachers, the following specific attributes and experiences are sought:
EAL/ESL certification or equivalent
Experience in co-planning and co-teaching models of support
Expertise in language instruction for English acquisition
Expertise and comfort in supporting core academics (primarily English, science and social studies)
Experience in administering and interpreting WIDA assessments strongly preferred
Experience in SIOP preferred
Skilled at developing support and accommodations for EAL students
